What i am going to do in my next analysis

Here's a list. A few things just to help me along the way;
  • Use analytical phrases
  • Don't rehash the film, or go into review mode, use more technical language to help explain what types of editing (deconstruct it)
  • Explain everything into more detail.
  • Use images (print screen shots) to help me when it comes to explaining a scene

Introduction to The Happening.

So we have been studying the happening, continuing to my previous blog about the happening. This blog is explaning the introduction in a lot more depth.

To start of with the easy parts:
Genre: the genre of this film is Hybrid. This is because even though the main idea of the film is to be a thiller it is also a horror in the introduction part of this film with a bit of comedy thrown into it.
NEXT!
The editing used in the introduction was used very effective. By doing what the director has done helps create the tense atmosphere and help make things roll into one. Using wide shots in the park helps show the different day to day lifestyles that people do, for example walking the dog going to work etc. This makes the audience believe that everything is settled and that it is a calm atmosphere to begin with. Although that the opening part shows a calm and collective setting, the camera also focuses on two characters who are situated on a bench in New York Central Park. These are two of the main characters in the opening scene as they help create the tension and set the plot for the rest of the film. The low melody played in the background throughout the introduction is a connotation of the thriller genre, the violin that is heard over the connotation is used to infer that it is to do with the atmosphere of the introduction. Also, the music contradicts the actual scene in the Central Park. In the connotations part of the introduction, tension is built up how people die. You hear a loud shriek from the distance in the park. This makes the audience question about why there is a scream in the Park at half 8 in the morning. An unconventional side to the introduction is that the people come to a halt or begin to walk backwards. The reason why this is Unconvential is because the scene originally showed people walking normally and doing daily activities. A cacophony of sounds is now heard in the background as the tension begins to build up, it is almost piercing to the human ears (this is the horror side of the introduction). The music that we hear is non-diagetic (this means that the characters in the film cannot hear the sounds. A repeat of the end line is heard by one of the characters ‘why is this happening’. It sets the audiences mind into character, and makes them think themselves why. A lot of close ups of the main characters are used to show the characters fear in their faces and also to show more detail when events are happening. When the woman repeats ‘I forgot what page I was on’ it sets the atmosphere more as this begins to show that everything’s kicking off. Wind is heard and point of view shots are used to make the audience think, ‘how is this happening?’, ‘where is all this coming from?’ Minimal dialogue is used from the girl who has not been affected. Lastly, panning shots are used to give you a more mixed mind about what is happening and why would it happen at half 8 in the morning in a park. Close-ups have given an air of mystery to the atmosphere and to the main characters.
